Magnetic USB – Is your Data Safe?

Concern has been raised over the past few months over the effects of having magnetised lids on a USB and whether, as is the case with floppy disk and hard drive media formats, this will cause problems with the data that one uploads.

The Drinks Can USB is a particularly good example of a magnetic USB  as the lid is quite heavily magnetised in comparison to other flash drives such as the Wooden USB range.

These concerns and are really unfounded for a simple reason. Flash drive memory is solid state and so has no moving parts and the data is stored as electrons and not changes in magnetic flux (as with floppy disks and hard drives). There is a direct quotation from Bill Frank, executive director of the CompactFlash Association (CF cards use the same types of memory chips as USB sticks to store data) that gives humorous (if slightly scary!) comfort to the security of your USB data. He says:

“A magnet powerful enough to disturb the electrons in flash would be powerful enough to suck the iron out of your blood cells”

The USB drink can is one of the most robust, attractive and well designed types of promotional USB available today. Made of metal they are truly a miniature representation of the ubiquitous drinks cans that are standard worldwide for soft drinks and beers. In addition they have a unique magnetic lid that has just enough power to securely fix it to the base and gives it a bit of tactile pleasure to boot. Once you pick it up and start playing with it, you won’t be able to put it down (nor will your clients!)

They are the obvious choice of USB for any promotional USB project for a drinks company or any promotion with a fluid theme.
But is this it? On the face of it this may be true, after all they are so obviously a drinks can that you couldn’t really pass them off as anything else?

Think again…
As a high quality promotional gift with intrinsic design qualities, it cries out for other uses beyond the drink can motif, so much so that a non drinks based theme would be thought of as uniquely clever with a well thought out campaign to carry it off.

For example, a campaign built around the phrase “We Can!” would allow for plenty of “puntastic” branding opportunity. Or canned creative juices? The can itself has connotations beyond a drink delivery medium, with tinned fruit and vegetables often having the perception of convenience, portability and longevity. This could easily lend itself to being aligned to an aspect of your brands service ethic.
Or consider the often heard mantra “Does what it says on the tin?” A phrase that could sum up a wide range of focussed businesses.
The design could even lend itself to depicting a battery, opening up a whole range of other uses. The possibilities are many, and combined with the build quality of this promo USB a successful promotion is just waiting to be let out of the (USB) can.

This drinks can USB style of promotional flash memory has to be a real thirst quencher in the sea of generic USB styles available!

Are Custom Shape Really USB Worth It?

The debate: Custom Shape USB -Is it really worth spending more for a unique shape for your USB?

I suppose there are times when a brand may not want to push the boat out, though in money terms we are not talking embarking on an ocean voyage, more a boating lake.
It depends on the purpose of this USB project, but in simple terms if you are going to put a logo on something, you obviously want it to be noticed! But surely you want it to be remembered to?

Ask yourself this question: which would I prefer to keep? A 4GB stick or an 8GB stick, well an 8GB of course. But here’s another question; which would I prefer, a standard USB with a logo or a miniature representation of a product, a unique product, a limited edition USB that not only represents the brand in far more detail , but also looks cool?

But there is another factor to be considered, about a year ago a 4GB memory was around £1.00-£1.50 a unit more than a 2GB on around 250-500 units, now its around 25p. A custom moulded USB on say 500 units was around £1.00 more (based on a 3D, less on 2D), now its still about the same.

When a USB that you received a year ago is superseded by a higher memory capacity USB, based on a similar model, you will upgrade, we all upgrade. Unless of course there is more to it! A friend mine took receipt of a USB shaped like a Nike trainer, it was a 1GB USB, 2 years later, he still has that USB as his preferred USB.

I wont labour point! Its cool, it will always be cool, it will always be unique and will always be a Mini Nike Trainer!

Custom moulded USBs offer more impact, more longevity, more collectability! They are cool, more desirable, more memorable and actually last longer (print comes off a plastic or metal USB eventually, that’s if you don’t lose, replace or forget about it first).

Of course, they do take a little more time to produce but the payback on the investment will make it all worthwhile

After over 10 years in Soho we have grown too big for our offices and are moving back to our South East London roots.

I don’t know how many of our clients have been to our Central London shop in Wardour St. but if you have you may have had to fight your way past a veritable mountain of cardboard boxes of jobs going out, stock coming in and supplies needed to keep our busy production department running.
Yes, after over 10 years in W1 we have finally decided that when you cant see staff over mountains of cardboard, then the place is too damn small. We have taken a long lease on a fantastic new place in SE1, conveniently close to both Waterloo East and Borough Market (I can feel the waistline expanding already!). Chinese Public Holiday

The People’s Republic of China was founded on October 1st 1949 in Tiananmen Square and there is an annual, week long holiday every year to celebrate. During this time all production stops across China, which means for most suppliers there is serious disruption to production schedules and orders are unlikely to be fulfilled for many weeks while the backlog of orders is cleared.

WeAreUSB not only has stock of USB in most popular capacities, but also has in house branding for the most popular designs. If you need Promotional USB supplied during October then we will most likely be one of the few USB suppliers in a position to help.

We are saddened to hear that Insight Promotions has gone into administration. Having had the opportunity to work with them on a number of occasions it is clear that the promotional gifts industry will not be the same without them.

It is certainly difficult trading times for custom USB suppliers, mostly due to the lack of availability of flash memory, but also the flood of cheap but sub-standard Chinese flash memory that has flooded the market. Choose your USB supplier carefully!
